Design Challenge
Design a catalyzing mixed-use project in the historically significant context of the Five Points neighborhood while anticipating the change that was about to be realized throughout the Welton corridor.
Accomplishments & Design Solution
Sensitively responding to the historic context of the Five Points neighborhood, The Wheatley provides much needed for-sale townhomes, rental apartments, and office space—prominently situated at the corner of Welton and 25th Street.
Rhythmically arranged along Welton Street, 3-story townhomes relate to existing residential structures to the south. Entry stoops relate to the familiar residential fabric of the area while also helping to further establish a human scale environment along the street. Stepping up to the 5-story apartment building along 26th, the corner is marked by the character-defining chamfered corner common to many of the historically significant buildings in the area. The building’s amenity spaces are situated at the southwest corner, capped by a roofline gesturing back to the city. The massing and materiality pay homage to the building’s historic context while establishing a high standard for what is to come.
