A few months into Denver’s new Downtown Area Plan process, the discussion about the future of the city’s core is picking up.
Denver’s Planning Board recommended approval, and on November 17, City Council voted to adopt the updated Downtown Area Plan.
The planning effort led by the City and County of Denver and the Downtown Denver Partnership is bringing together residents, businesses, designers, and community leaders to think about what downtown should look like in the coming years. The goal is to build on the previous Downtown Area Plan from 2007 while responding to the realities cities are facing today.
The discussion is looking closely at how downtown connects to nearby neighborhoods, how streets and public spaces can feel more welcoming, and how housing can bring more life to the center of the city.
Another big topic is office space. With many buildings underused, people are looking at how some of that space might be reused in new ways.
Downtown Denver has long been at the center of the region’s economic and cultural life. This is a chance to think about how it should continue to evolve.
It will be interesting to see where the conversation goes next.
