Design Challenge
Transform the former Acme Brickworks site into a mixed use district through a public/private partnership. The work focused on planning and designing streets, courtyards, buildings, and public spaces to create a downtown destination that enhances and energizes the community.
Accomplishments & Design Solution
Urban planning set the framework, drawing from Castle Rock’s existing downtown grid to define familiar lot and block patterns, pedestrian-friendly street sections, and a system of public spaces. The Craine team then focused on how those spaces would function day to day, shaping active street fronts, varied courtyard sizes, and walkable connections. The plan reflects an understanding of both the risk and opportunity in mixed use development, where success depends on the life of the spaces between buildings.
Architecturally, the development draws from the site’s industrial history. Reclaimed brick and familiar building forms tie the new district to its past. Contemporary detailing, proportions, and materials give the district a modern identity.
Across the project, planning, design, and architecture work together to bring people to downtown Castle Rock and give the district a distinct sense of character.
