Design Challenge

Set within a neighborhood defined by lower-slung homes with a horizontal profile, the design needed to respect Bow Mar’s established character while taking full advantage of a generous site and its relationship to the lake.

Accomplishments & Design Solution

From the street, the Bow Mar Residence reads as a modest, single-story volume, aligned with the scale of neighboring homes. The site slopes gently toward Bow Mar Lake, and the house moves with it. The plan unfolds in connected wings, stepping with the terrain and turning toward lake views.

Indoor and outdoor spaces were conceived together from the start. The home accommodates both large gatherings and daily family life. The art studio and boathouse extend the house beyond traditional living space, folding creative work and time on the water into daily life. Patios and decks trace the descent into the yard, linking rooms to the landscape. Doors stay open. The home handles a crowd of kids as naturally as a peaceful evening by the lake.
